How is gratitude defined?

You can define gratitude as the quality of being appreciative and thankful. It can be useful to give clients examples of what gratitude looks like in action. We’ve listed an example below.

Scenario: A friend offered to help you move, but broke a lamp during the process.

Behavior Response
Gratitude Behavior Expressing appreciation or thankfulness that your friend offered to help you move in the first place. If you had to move on your own, more of your items could have been broken.
Non-Gratitude Behavior Feeling upset or angry, and focusing on the broken lamp with total disregard for your friend’s kind deed.

How can gratitude be measured?

Instructing clients to set aside five minutes during the day to reflect on what they are thankful for can result in an influx of positive emotions. Encourage clients to keep the journal handy and reference anytime they feel a lack of gratitude or low self-esteem.
